The Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve and NOAA Fisheries have been conducting a monthly capture and tagging program to better assess the population of green turtles/ Honu (Chelonia mydas) that live within the confines of the park. In order to better understand the range and behavior of these Honu, a sonic tag has been placed on one of the well know resident, Nugget. Nugget was first captured in at Hanauma Bay1992 and has most likely been residing at the park ever since. In order to track Nuggets movements, a series of sonic tracking stations that are situated offshore within the boundary of park waters will be used. Nugget now has a sonic tag (see above photo) that will be picked up and recorded by the listening stations whenever Nugget swims within 30-50 meters of the station. In addtiion, Nugget has a Time-Depth recorder tag that will record depth, temperature, time and date every 60 seconds. With these two instruments, we hope to gain a better understanding of Nugget's home range and diving behavior over the next few months.
