HPA/NOAA SEA TURTLE RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION PROGRAM

Kapoho, Hawaii

Tagging Trip

Students from HPA joined George Balazs (NOAA Fisheries) at Kapoho, Hawaii to capture and tag green turtles. Four students worked on Saturday, Sunday and Monday and 3 students worked on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (4/28-5/3/07). Kapoho is a very unique area with many inlets and lagoons that are heated by hydrothermal fresh water that flows into the area in large quantities. The green turtles in the area come into the shallows to rest, primarily during the night time. The research team captures them during the night and measures, weighs and does a thorough health assessment prior to letting them go. Our efforts this time concentrated on areas called Blind Inlet, Mangrove Cove and Champagne Pond. We were able to capture 50 green turtles during this trip. In addition to the regular morphometrics, we downloaded one of our TDR turtles that was recaptured in Champagne Pond and put another TDR out on a recently captured Champagne Pond turtle.
